Police, protesters clash in Turkey

Despite ban, tens of thousands march to mark Republic Day

Riot police pepper-spray demonstrators holding national flags and posters of Turkey's founder, Kemal Ataturk, as they march to the mausoleum of Ataturk to celebrate Republic Day in Ankara, Turkey, on Monday.

Police used tear gas and water cannons against a demonstration by tens of thousands of pro-secular protesters, but Monday’s march to mark the founding of the Turkish republic went on in defiance of a government ban.
