Board Works To Finish Grounds

— The School Board wants to sit down with contractors for the new high school and athletic complex to work out a plan to finish the grounds.

During a walk around the campus Monday, board members noted several areas where recent rain has washed out unpaved areas. Board members Dax Moreton, Connie Meyer and Kendra Moore were accompanied by architect Steve Elliott and Superintendent Clay Hendrix. Board members Scott Davis and Jim Ayers did not attend.

Hendrix described the situation as a need for “final grading and seeding.”

They also listed several areas on the asphalt track that need to be smoothed and realigned so rain water doesn’t puddle. Moreton said waves in the asphalt at the long jump runway need to be smoothed.

“This is way too nice to have little things tear it up,” Moreton said of the need for grading and planting grass in dirt areas.

Moore suggested bringing the contractors together to discuss a resolution to the situation so all parties, including the School District, can work together to get the work completed.

Nabholz Construction Services was the construction manager for the high school building and a portion of the grounds. Benchmark Construction was the contractor for the athletic complex, which includes the football field, track, concessions building, bleachers and fencing. A field house is outside the fencing but is part of the athletic complex.

The 96,000-square-foot high school, on a 40-acre tract on the east side of the city, houses eighth- through 12th-grades and cost $13.2 million. Nearly half was paid by the state through a facilities partnership program for schools. Voters approved a 2.9-mill increase in the district’s tax rate in 2010 to finance its share of the cost, making the total tax rate for the district 42.7 mills.

A contract with Benchmark, approved last April, was for $1.3 million for the athletic complex.
