High school football report

— Bulldogs’ call-ups thriving

Star City’s second season began last week when the Bulldogs promoted freshmen from a junior high team that had recorded consecutive 8-0 seasons.

So far, so good.

Star City (6-2, 3-2 8-4A) beat Lake Village 56-30 as freshman quarterback Tye Brown completed 9 of 13 passes for 278 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Brown, the son of Bulldogs Coach Blair Brown, did most of his damage in the second quarter, when he completed 7 of 10 passes for 245 yards and 3 touchdowns.

“It was magical,” Blair Brown said.

Also making his varsity debut was freshman offensive/defensive tackle Austin Capps, 6-4, 275 pounds.

Brown said Capps ran a 5.08-second 40-yard dash at an Arkansas State camp this summer.

“He’s a freak,” Brown said. “He’s an impressive physical specimen.”

Brown said his son and Capps worked with the varsity this summer, but believed it was best if both remained on the junior high team until it completed its season.

Brown said his son, 6-2, 155 pounds, had 24 touchdown passes in junior high this fall.

“He’s a thrower,” Brown said.

JUNCTION CITY

Air Dragons

Junction City senior quarterback Shaquille Hunter set three school records for passing in last week’s 62-12 victory over Parkers Chapel, Dragons historian Wayne Pumphrey said.

Hunter set new marks for passing yardage (270) and touchdown passes (5) in a game and career touchdown passes (22).

Junction City, No. 1 in Class 2A, has been known for power running from the Wishbone under Coach David Carpenter, who led the Dragons to state championships in 2003, 2008 and 2009.

Carpenter said Junction City is still a base Wishbone team, but probably runs more Spread now.

“It’s personnel,” Carpenter said.

“We’ve got some kids that are really good throwing and catching the football.”

Junction City’s leading rusher is sophomore Jaqwis Dancy, who has carried 83 times for 838 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Junction City (7-1, 6-0 8-2A) can clinch a No. 1 playoff seed with a victory tonight at Hermitage.

BENTONVILLE

Top Tiger

Bentonville senior tailback Tearris Wallace became the first7A-West player to reach 4,000 career rushing yards in last week’s 55-7 victory at Van Buren.

Wallace rushed 17 times for 182 yards and 3 touchdowns to push his career total to 4,108.

“Doing really well,” Bentonville Coach Barry Lunney said of Wallace. “I mean, he’s doing better than well.”

Wallace has seven 100-yard rushing games this fall for the top-ranked Tigers (8-0), who have won 33 consecutive regularseason games and 24 consecutive conference games.

Wallace was the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Sophomore Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 1,568 yards.

Bentonville won the Class 7A state championship in 2010 and was state runner-up last fall when Wallace ran for 1,348 yards.

Lunney said Bentonville has yet to fill its Week 3 open date for the 2013 schedule, but Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy, a nationally prominent suburban Nashville school, has called.

Bentonville beat Batesville (Miss.) South Panola 41-6 in Week 3 this season, but it only had a oneyear deal with that school.

Lunney said he wants Bentonville to finish the 2012 season before making any decision about the open date.
