Drug Court Lands Grant

The conference announced a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration for the Washington/Madison County Adult Drug Treatment and Diversion Court. The court is one of 12 across the country to receive the grant.
The Washington/Madison County Drug Court received a three-year, $975,000 federal grant Monday to help pay for treatment, education and job programs, and to track participants to determine what works.

What Is Drug Court?
Washington/Madison County Drug Court was established in April 1999 with five participants under the supervision of Circuit Judge Mary Ann Gunn. It serves more than 150 clients a year, and about 1,500 people have participated. More than 86 percent of all participants successfully graduate from the program; the national average is 75 percent.
The program aims to keep nonviolent, first-time drug offenders out of the court system and get them off drugs by placing them in an intensive, nine-month counseling and supervision program.
