— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 21, 1912 BENTONVILLE - The houses within the corporate limits of Bentonville are being rapidly numbered in accordance with a recent ordinance of the City Council. It is hoped by the citizens that Bentonville will be chosen as one of the towns for experimental free delivery as set forth in the post office appropriation bill passed by the last Congress.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 21, 1962

Congressman Wilbur Mills has asked the Census Bureau to seek a retraction or explanation of a forecast that Arkansas will lose nearly 20 percent of its population by 1980. Also joining the protest was L.L. Baxter of Fayetteville, northwest Arkansas industrialist, who said that he telephoned Dean Witter &Co. in New York, the investment firm which published the prediction. Baxter said that he was advised by the firm Friday that the population estimates had been given by the Census Bureau to the Senate Select Committee on National Water Resources. Sen. Robert Kerr of Oklahoma is chairman of the committee.

25 YEARS AGO Oct. 21, 1987

Prominent members of the state’s business community expressed confidence Tuesday that record declines in the stock market recently would not have a significant impact, psychological or otherwise, on the Arkansas economy. “We’re not a state of tape watchers,” Charles Murphy Jr., chairman of Murphy Oil Co. of El Dorado, said in a telephone interview. He said Arkansas is not as closely linked to “major money centers” such as New York and Chicago as other parts of the country are.

10 YEARS AGO Oct. 21, 2002

Election officials scaled back Pulaski County’s early voting Sunday from eight locations to one, saying the electronic voting machines aren’t ready and that paper ballots are the better option. Election Commissioners Charles King, Sally Stevens and Ann Smith announced the decision at a news conference. Early voting will be held only at the Pulaski County Courthouse starting today, they said, though the number of sites could be expanded after this week.
