More problems created than solved

Medical marijuana is a complex issue. No one wants to see their loved ones suffer from the gut-wrenching side effects of chemotherapy or a chronic illness. On the other hand, is approving smoked marijuana as a medicine the responsible thing to do? Science and experience say no.

I have to ask - when the author of this special editorial writes "...if passed, Issue 5 would set up an extensive system of marijuana stores in our state...," what state is he talking about? He is on the faculty at the University of Florida, and according to Wikipedia, is a resident of Maryland and D.C.

Maryland also has a marijuana referendum on the ballot, and I wonder if he's writing about that and not Issue 5. Mr. Sabet does not accurately describe the Arkansas ballot issue but quickly launches into Reefer Madness-like descriptions of the horrors of cannibis use and poorly supported assertions about the impacts of medical marijuana in other states (really? more pot stores than Starbucks in California? One Google search shows this to be incorrect. Teenagers shouldn't use pot - again, really? I don't see this as a component of the Issue on the ballot.)

I don't really have a dog in this fight - I am not a user, don't know user-patients, and haven't decided which way to vote on this. I am however disappointed that the Democrat-Gazette published this - I found more credible and balanced information on medical marijuana on Fox.com; it also disappoints me that my own fact-checking is more accurate than my daily news source.
