Woman injured after train hits car

Posted: October 19, 2012 at 10:45 a.m.

— Arkansas-Missouri Railroad Police Chief Ron Sparks said a 30-year-old woman has been taken to the Washington Regional Medical Center after her car was struck by a train in Johnson this morning.

Sparks said the train, which consisted of five passenger cars and one engine, was traveling east at 8:45 a.m. at about 20 mph on Friday. He said a woman failed to yield at the Main Street railroad crossing and was struck by the train.

"The train was blowing its horn and witnesses said they heard it," Sparks said. "She was pinned in the car for a period of time, but they were able to extricate her."

Sparks said the woman suffered minor injuries. No other passengers were in the vehicle.

Sparks declined to release the identity of the woman pending notification of family.

As busy as that area is sometimes it is hard to believe there is no warning lights to make the drivers aware of oncoming trains. Most people are just to blind to even look both ways before crossing and with train horn going off it is just hard to believe this young woman almost lost her life . Maybe next time she crosses here she will slow down and look both ways.
