The price of jackets worn by the state’s prison guards has an employees’ union at odds with prison officials over who should foot the bill. A union representing state Department of Correction officers filed a grievance earlier this month challenging a new policy requiring them to wear a state-issuedjacket if they want to wear such apparel. The jackets, made by prisoners, will be provided free of charge to new security officers, but the state’s 2,400 current security officers will have to buy their own at a cost of $22 to $32. Prison officials said they can’t afford to buy all the jackets all at once.
