A motorcyclist died Sunday after his 2008 Harley Davidson ran off the road and hit a mailbox, authorities said.

Terry W. Nichols, 59, of Fort Smith was riding north on South Albert Pike Street near South S Street in Fort Smith when the motorcycle went off the road at a curve, Arkansas State Police said. It happened shortly before 8:45 a.m.

According to a preliminary report, the motorcycle then crashed into the brick-and-concrete mailbox. Nichols was dead at the scene.

Nichols is the 409th person to die in a traffic accident in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
