Boudrey, Cardinals Outlast Gravette

Spencer Boudrey made life miserable Friday for the Gravette Lions.

Boudrey caught two touchdown passes and scored on a 70-yard run to lead Farmington to a 34-27 victory over the Lions in 4A-1 Conference action at Allen Holland Field. Sophomore quarterback Keaton Austin contributed three touchdown passes, including strikes of 79 and 40 yards in the first half to Boudrey.

Farmington (6-1, 3-1) scored five consecutive touchdowns after Gravette (2-5, 1-3) took a brief lead on a 17-yard touchdown run by quarterback Chase Brody, who also scored on a 65-yard run after Boudrey began the second half with a 70-yard run to put the Cardinals ahead 34-7.

WHY FARMINGTON WON Cardinals overcame a poor start and scored five consecutive touchdowns to take a 34-7 lead early in the third quarter. Farmington also had a couple of defensive stops in the fourth quarter to end Gravette’s comeback attempt.

WHY GRAVETTE LOST Gravette could not contain Spencer Boudrey, who ran for a 70-yard touchdown and caught two touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Keaton Austin. The Lions tried but could not catch up after falling behind 34-7 early in the third quarter.

Gravette continued its comeback effort in the second half behind Brody, who added a 6-yard touchdown run and a 71-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Means to cut Farmington’s lead to 34-27. But the Lions failed on a fourth-down attempt at Farmington 5 and Boudrey got the Cardinals out of danger with a 30-yard run.

“Boudrey is the guy we build our offense around, and it’s obvious why,” Farmington coach Mike Adams said. “On that long pass play, that wasn’t the rout we called for but he and Keaton made an adjustment and (Boudrey) broke it off deep.”

Gravette had a final chance after getting to ball back with 46 seconds left, but the Lions could only get to their 45-yard line before time expired. Gravette fell to Farmington for the second consecutive year in a close series the Cardinals now lead, 14-12.

“Farmington is a great team, obviously, at 6-1 and losing to Prairie Grove by only a touchdown,” Gravette coach Bill Harrelson said. “But I’m proud of my kids and the way they fought.”

Austin and Boudrey began their scoring spree in the second quarter after Austin had a pass dropped by another receiver. The left-handed quarterback stood behind good protection and flung a pass down the middle to Boudrey, who caught the pass and went 79 yards for the score.

Two minutes later, Austin again found Boudrey behind the Gravette defense and he made the catch to give Farmington a 27-7 lead with 47 seconds left in the second quarter.

Boudrey found another way to score in the third quarter when he took a pitch from Austin and outran the Gravette defense for a 70-yard touchdown run. That was the last score for the Cardinals, who had to fight off a comeback attempt led by Brody.

Farmington got off to a bad start when its opening kickoff went out of bounds and set Gravette up for a quick score. Gravette got the ball at its 35-yard line then used a 12-play, 65-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. Brody carried six times on the drive and scored on a 17-yard keeper on fourth-and-6 to put the Lions ahead.

Farmington answered with a touchdown its first series when Matt Brackett caught a 25-yard touchdown from Austin, but Juan Flores missed the extra point to leave Gravette with a 7-6 lead. The Cardinals didn’t do much else wrong and scored four consecutive touchdowns to lead 34-7 after Boudrey’s long touchdown run to begin the second half.
