— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 12, 1912

Clyde O. Hall, driver of an ambulance for P. H. Ruebel & Co., reported to the police that an attempt was made to hold him up at an alley near Sixth and Byrd streets last night. Mr. Hall was driving his ambulance and as he passed the alley, about 9 o’clock, he says two men emerged, covered him with pistols and demanded that he throw up his hands. Instead, Mr. Hall says he whipped up his horse and made a hasty get-away.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 12, 1962

You can’t trust anybody these days - those are the sentiments of Donald M.Bogaard, a postal employee at Little Rock. Bogaard stopped his red, white and blue truck while on a collection run yesterday, got out and stepped around the corner to empty a box in front of the YMCA. He followed the usual practice of leaving the motor running. When he returned in about 1 minute, the truck was gone. It was found a few minutes later eight blocks away in the downtown section of the city - with nothing amiss. Bogaard said there were two locked mail pouches in thetruck and one open sack. None appeared to have been disturbed. Maybe the guy just needed a ride, Bogaard philosophized.

25 YEARS AGO Oct. 12, 1987

Attendance during the first two days of the State Fair was 101,012, 16 percent more than last year, John R. “Johnnie” Holmes, Arkansas Livestock Show Association executive vice president, said Sunday. On Friday, 141,271 people came through the gates; 35,600 people attended the opening day of the fair in 1986. Holmes also said opening day broke an attendance record since the fair began running for 10 days in 1971.

10 YEARS AGO Oct. 12, 2002

U.S. District Judge Bill Wilson Jr. on Friday refused to reconsider his landmark Sept. 13 order that released the Little Rock School District from all but one area of court supervision of desegregation efforts. Friday’s ruling clears the way for the Joshua intervenors - the class of all black students in the district - to appeal the order to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals at St. Louis.
