Lane Widening Waste Of Tax Dollars?

A tip of the hat to the construction company and workers who recently finished the lane widening between Exit 62 and Exit 64 (on Interstate 540). It looks great. It was done in record time, too. Oneday last week there were still orange cones everywhere and the next day I looked, everything was cleaned up and gone. The tall protective wall dividing the north and south lanes is great.

I heard on the radio this morning that the 1.5 miles ofadditional lanes came at a cost of just under $8 million.

Here is where I am failing to understand the reason this was done. We have two-lane interstate 540 going north and south for about 70 miles. Between two off ramps we have three lanes. I am notsure this is really worth $8 million, even though it is a moot point now. Maybe someone can enlighten me so I can feel my tax dollars are not still being wasted.
