Hoop Hogs open preseason in primetime

— The 2012-13 basketball preseason is underway in the Ozarks.

Arkansas' men's and women's basketball teams held their annual tip-off event on Friday night at Bud Walton Arena, signaling the beginning of preseason practices.

Led by guards BJ Young and Mardracus Wade, the White team beat the Red 39-33 in a 20-minute scrimmage for the men. Young scored 12 points, while Alandise Harris added eight points and Kikko Haydar six for the winning unit.

Marshawn Powell led the Red team with a scrimmage-high 15 points. Michael Qualls added nine points.

The White team beat the Red team 19-17 in the women's scrimmage, which lasted 10 minutes. Sophomore guard Calli Berna and freshman guard Dominique Wilson each scored 10 points, connecting on a pair of 3-point baskets.

Davion Spivey beat BJ Young and Alandise Harris in the finals of the dunk contest for the men. Spivey scored 46 points in the finals, edging out Young, who scored 45 on his final dunk attempt.

Young had the only perfect score of 50 in the dunk contest during the first round. Former Arkansas players Ron Brewer, Todd Day and Pat Bradley were among the judges for the contest.

Arkansas will hold its annual Red-White games on Oct. 30. Both teams will begin their season on Nov. 9 with a women's game against Jackson State and a men's game against Sam Houston State.
