August trade gap rises 4.1%; China deficit at $28.7 billion

The MSC Beatrice, the largest container ship to make port in North America, is docked in the Port of Long Beach, Calif., earlier this month. The U.S. trade deficit widened in August to $44.2 billion, the Commerce Department said Thursday.

The U.S. trade deficit widened in August from July because exports fell to the lowest level in six months. The wider deficit likely dragged on already-weak economic growth.
