Jury finds man guilty of beating mother to death

CLARKSVILLE A Johnson County Circuit Court jury took 28 minutes to convict Tommy Bowden of first-degree murder in the beating death of his 71-year-old mother with a shovel.
Prosecuting Attorney David Gibbons told the jury of nine women and three men in closing arguments that Bowden could have turned back anytime during his more than 30-mile drive from Dardanelle to Julie Richardson’s home in Hagarville on Jan. 30. But he didn’t and that showed he was guilty of purposely causing his mother’s death.
Assistant Arkansas Medical Examiner Dr. Adam Craig testified that Richardson suffered 14 blows in the attack that killed her.
Circuit Judge William Pearson told jurors to return at 9 a.m. Thursday for the penalty phase of the trial.
