High school football report

— Charleston sophomore quarterback Ty Storey needed only six games to set a single-season school yardage record.

Storey completed 27 of 48 passes for 383 yards and 3 touchdowns in Friday night’s 32-29 loss at Atkins.

He has completed 162 of 246 passes for 2,229 yards and 25 touchdowns this season.

Dustin Shelby completed 131 of 218 passes for 2,202 yards and 21 touchdowns last fall.

Shelby, Charleston’s first 2,000-yard passer in a season, led the Tigers to a 13-1 record and the Class 3A state championship.

“It’s a totally different mindset,” Charleston Coach Doug Loughridge said. “When you’ve got a guy like this, you throw it.”

Charleston trailed 32-7 at halftime against Atkins but rallied in the final 24 minutes behind Storey, who ran 4 yards for a touchdown and threw touchdown passes of 28 and 15 yards.

Loughridge said Storey had nine passes dropped.

“We’re young,” Loughridge said. “We just dug ourselves too big of a hole.”

Charleston (4-2, 2-1 4-3A) hosts Lamar on Friday night. Atkins and Lamar share the 4-3A lead at 3-0.

“I thought before the season that nobody would go through this conference unbeaten,” Loughridge said. “There’s a lot of football left to be played.”

Loughridge said Storey, 6-3, 217 pounds, “got a little banged around” against Atkins and suffered a swollen knee.

Storey will play quarterback against Lamar, Loughridge said, but won’t see defensive action.

Storey normally starts at cornerback, but played middle linebacker in the second half against Atkins, Loughridge said.

GLEN ROSE

Coney still out

Glen Rose, No. 1 in Class 3A, will be without senior tailback Dillon Coney on Friday night at Fountain Lake, Beavers Coach Mark Kehner said.

Coney broke his hand in a 48-21 victory over Benton Harmony Grove on Sept. 21.

The hope, Kehner said the following week, was that Coney could return against Fountain Lake, a game that should decide the 5-3A championship.

But doctors advised against Coney playing Friday, Kehner said.

“They said we would be rolling the dice if he got hit just right; he would be done for the year,” Kehner said. “We’re choosing to hold him out until probably Week 9 to give those bones a little bit longer to heal.”

Coney has rushed 50 times for 339 yards and 4 touchdowns this fall.

In Coney’s absence, sophomore tailback Carlos Burton has emerged as the leading rusher for Glen Rose (5-1, 3-0 5-3A).

Burton has carried 57 times for 787 yards and 13 touchdowns.

BENTONVILLE

Wallace nears milestone

Bentonville senior tailback Tearris Wallace needs 185 rushing yards Friday night against Rogers Heritage to become the first player in 7A-West history to reach 4,000 in a career.

Wallace has rushed 576 times for 3,815 yards and 54 touchdowns in 32 career games.

Wallace has rushed for more than 100 yards in 16 games, including 191 yards and five touchdowns in Bentonville’s 49-28 victory over Fayetteville in Class 7A state championship as a sophomore.

He was the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Sophomore Offensive Player of the Year after rushing 207 times for 1,568 yards and 21 touchdowns.
