CLARKSVILLE Johnson County Circuit Court jurors on Wednesday watched the emotional videotaped confession of Tommy Bowden, who is on trial for first-degree murder in the Jan. 30 beating death of his 71-year-old mother.
Often talking through tears and moaning in apparent anguish, Bowden, 53, described to sheriff’s investigators how he beat Julie Richardson with a shovel so hard that it shattered the shovel’s wooden handle into four pieces.
He admitted he went to his mother’s home in Hagarville northeast of Clarksville with the purpose of killing her after learning that her husband, his stepfather, was in the hospital. He told investigators he believed Richardson tried to poison him and his stepfather.
Testimony began Wednesday in the trial, which is expected to last the rest of this week.
