City Sells Fire Engine To Highfill

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

— Highfill will have a new fire engine after the Bentonville City Council accepted its bid for a 1997 surplus truck at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Highfill offered the only bid, $58,002, for a 1997 E-One truck offered for sale Aug. 1. The Fire Department budgeted $450,000 this year to buy a new truck, according to agenda documents.

Mayor Bob McCaslin introduced the city’s new assistant fire chief, Gary Birch. Birch comes to Bentonville from the Holt Community Fire Protection District and the Liberty Fire Department, both north of Kansas City, Mo.

Former assistant chief Brent Boydston was promoted to chief after Dan White resigned in March.

“We’re glad to have you as part of our team,” McCaslin said the Birch.

The council also approved buying seven circuit breakers for $116,554 for an electric substation. Siemens Energy was selected to replace the breakers upwards of 20 years old, according to Travis Matlock, engineering director.

Two other companies, Schneider Electric and Mitsubishi Electric, also submitted bids. While Siemens was the low bidder, it also required the longest time to deliver the breakers. The company estimates it could take 19 to 20 weeks before the items are shipped.

The breakers will be installed when the C Substation is upgraded in early 2012, Matlock said.

The Electric Department will contract with NovaTech for remote terminal units for the substation for $34,175.
