Money manners: When charity pocketed

DEAR JEANNE AND LEONARD: What should you do when someone pockets a donation intended for charity? My wife, “Nancy,” attended the funeral of one of her high-school teachers and, while there, asked the teacher’s widow to what charity she’d like donations made in the teacher’s memory. The widow said she hadn’t decided yet, so Nancy gave her a check for $50, leaving the payee blank, and asked the widow to give it to the charity of her choosing. But when we saw the canceled check, we discovered that the widow had made it out to herself. I feel we’ve been ripped off and should confront this woman, but Nancy wants to let it go.
