Local unemployment down to 5.3 percent

The area’s unemployment dipped to 5.3 percent in August while the labor force continued to grow, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The rate was 6.4 percent in August 2011 in the Metropolitan Statistical Area that encompasses Washington, Benton, Madison and McDonald, Mo., counties.
The labor force grew by 4.7 percent as 9,400 jobs were added in the past year. The labor force was 240,700 in August compared to 230,200 a year earlier.
