— The president of the Humane Society of the United States says he’s running for a spot on Tyson Foods Inc.’s board of directors.

President Wayne Pacelle announced his candidacy for a seat on the meat processing company’s board Tuesday.

A Tyson spokesman didn’t immediately comment, but said in an e-mail that he would respond to questions soon.

Pacelle says he would urge Tyson to commit to a time frame to phase out the confinement of sows in gestation crates.

The Humane Society of the United States says it owns stock in Tyson Foods and has urged the company to revamp its policies.

Tyson is based in Springdale.
