Goodwin Leads in Council Race; Hatfield Ahead of Jackson

— It appears Ward 4, Position 2, Alderman Bob Goodwin, will serve another term on the Rogers Council, beating newcomer Carlos Chicas.

With 16 of 26 precincts reporting at 9:30 p.m., Goodwin had 986 votes to Chicas’ 666 votes.

A runoff is required between the two candidates with the most votes when a race has three or more candidates and no one candidate receives more than 50 percent or a plurality of the votes cast.

Vote totals are unofficial until approved by the Benton County Quorum Court.

“This has been a very different election for me,” Goodwin said. “In the 27 years I’ve been on the council I’ve only had an opponent a couple of times.”

Goodwin said he expects to step down from the council after he finishes this two-year term.

“I love this city. I lived here most of my life and raised my family here. “I’ll 89 at the end of the next term. I think I will hang it up then,” Goodwin said.

Andrew Hatfield finished in second place during the general election November 6, for the Rogers Ward 3, Position 2 seat on the council but was leading at 9:30 p.m.

Hatfield garnered 777 votes with opponent Keith Jackson trailing with 719 votes. This was the first time either candidate had run for City Council.

There was no incumbent for the Ward 3, Position 2 seat. Alderwoman Betsy Reithemeyer held the position but a change of ward lines moved her to Ward 4, Position 2 where she ran unopposed.

“We had a pretty good turnout,” Hatfield said. “I’m very excited about being on the council. We worked very hard between the general election and the runoff. It looks like it’s going to turn out OK for us.”

Ronnie Breland was leading Guy Schumaker shortly before 10 p.m. for Ward 4, Position 2 seat on the Lowell City Council.
