— 100 YEARS AGO Nov. 27, 1912

BATESVILLE - A book shower given today at the home of Miss Varina Cook by the Daughters of 1812, netted about 30 volumes for the battleship Arkansas, and the books will be forwarded to Little Rock tomorrow to go with others to the officers of the battleship. Among the books were several by Arkansas authors, and one just off the press, Mrs. J. R. Kennerly’s “Travels Abroad.”

50 YEARS AGO Nov. 27, 1962

People in the Runyan Community near Jacksonville have urged dog owners to take unwanted dogs to the city pound instead of releasing them in that area.Complaints have been made that diseased and dangerous-looking dogs are loose in that neighborhood. It’s just as easy to take an unwanted dog to the city pound where it will not endanger other peoples’ pets and children, one resident of the Runyan Community pointed out.

25 YEARS AGO Nov. 27, 1987

WASHINGTON - U.S.District Judge George Revercomb is expected to rule within the next few weeks on a lawsuit that seeks to force President Reagan to comply with the War Powers Act. The suit was filed Aug. 6 by Rep. Bill Alexander, D-Ark. and a group of other Democratic members of Congress. The lawsuit asks that the president notify Congress that he has introduced U.S. armed forces into “imminent hostilities” in the Persian Gulf.

10 YEARS AGO Nov. 27, 2002

GRAVETTE - State Rep.Kim Hendren wants motorists to be able to proclaim their disdain for abortion on their vehicles’ state-issued license plates. Hendren, a Gravette Republican who will become a state senator in January, said he’ll introduce legislation that would allow drivers to pick a “choose life” license plate when registering their cars. It would be similar to the specialty license plates now available that support a variety of causes, from university alumni associations to a conservation fund.
