Women Face Abuse Charge

— Police arrested two women Saturday in connection with abuse of an 11-year-old boy.

Sharanda Leann Hammock, 27, of 6241 W. Milliken Bend in Fayetteville, the boy’s foster mother, and Cecily Maria Sharp, 23, were arrested on charges of second-degree battery, a felony, and permitting abuse, according to a police report.

Hammock told police that the boy received burns to his legs and genital area from a bath. She said that Sharp had boiled water on the stove because a lack of hot water from doing laundry and poured the water into the bathtub.

Hammock said the boy got into the bathtub and that she heard additional water running into the tub. Shortly afterward, she heard a commotion coming from the bathroom, she told police. She went to the bathroom and saw the boy partially hanging over the side of the bathtub, saying that the water was hot. She then assisted him out of the tub and saw redness on his legs and genital area, Hammock told police.

Hammock told police she placed a cool wash cloth on the affected areas. She noticed that the areas began to blister the next day.

The boy’s therapist found burns to his lower legs during an appointment.

Police interviewed both Hammock and Sharp on Saturday and said that the two accounts did not match and that Hammock’s story was not consistent with the injuries.

Hammock and Sharp were in the Washington County Detention Center on Sunday. They were released about 5:30 p.m. Sunday on $5,000 bond each.
