— 100 YEARS AGO Nov. 26, 1912

HOT SPRINGS - More than 100 men of the various churches of Hot Springs met yesterday afternoon in the First Baptist Church, under the auspices of the Pastors’ Association of Hot Springs, and passed resolutions commending the state fair and the men who make it possible, but condemning the automobile races held there last Sunday. The Baptist convention also was endorsed for calling Governor Donaghey’s attention to this “Sabbath desecration.”

50 YEARS AGO Nov. 26, 1962

The Justice Building Commission, hoping it sees the end of its troubles which has unsettled the south end of the structure, has let a contract for $7,163 to keep the troublesome soil underneath stabilized.About three years ago cracks began appearing in the new building and after investigation it was decided that the shortage of funds prevented some preliminary work that should have been done on the foundation.

25 YEARS AGO Nov. 26, 1987

Pulaski County Judge Don Venhaus branded as “absolutely unethical”Tuesday night a practice by the attorney general’s office of rendering opinions over the telephone based on information provided by news reporters. He made the charge as a question arose Tuesday night about whether the Pulaski County Quorum Court should meet in executive session. Venhaus said Wednesday he did not mean to criticize reporters from the Arkansas Democrat and Arkansas Gazette for asking the attorney general’s office for an opinion, but that the office should not have issued one. He said a verbal opinion delivered by the attorney general’s office based on circumstances relayed by a reporter should not carry the weight of the law.

Business leaders and educators have officially joined forces to form a nonprofit foundation to raise money for Little Rock schools. Sen. John Riggs, D-Little Rock, and president of the Public Education Foundation of Little Rock, said the group has more than $325,000 in financial commitments and a goal of $3 million in donations over three years. Riggs said the foundation will operate with, although remain independent of, the Little Rock School District.
