PUBLIC VIEWPOINT: Council Candidate Chicas Deserves Chance

There are rumors in Rogers of a campaign to keep Carlos Chicas out of the Rogers City Council because he is Latino. I hope the rumors are incorrect as the population in Rogers is 35 percent to 40 percent Hispanic with even higher percentages in the schools. Carlos has been accused of spending his campaign money irresponsibly. But everyone running for office has to report every penny coming in and going out or risk consequences. Any money spent was for name recognition, which is critical in any political race.

As part of the conservative non-Hispanic population, I am concerned citizens may be actively campaigning to keep 40 percent of the population from having a voice in the community. I really thought we were more intelligent and more concerned about our communities. It seems that prejudices are alive and well. I will guess those involved in this “rumor” think the Hispanics living in Rogers won’t vote. Maybe Romney’s team thought the same thing.

Chicas brings much to the table. He didn’t get involved in the community to look good for politics. He has been involved and given back to his community and looks at this involvement as his responsibility as a community member. His motto is “Together is Better.”

I want to say “thank you” to Bob Goodwin, who has served the community of Rogers for almost 30 years and has done good things as a councilman. He should be proud of his accomplishments.

If Rogers is going to continue to grow, it must embrace its diversity and that includes changes in its infrastructure. ... Don’t turn your back and ignore the future. Vote for Carlos Chicas for Rogers City Council, Ward 4 Position 1. Sadly, I am not a Rogers resident and I can’t vote for Carlos, so please vote on my behalf.
