— Greenland’s players might need a few days to get over the sting of Friday’s 49-14 loss to Prescott in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A playoffs.

However, within minutes of his season coming to an end at Jonathan Ramey Memorial Stadium, Greenland coach Lee Larkan was able to look back fondly over the past few months.

That Figures

8 — Punts by Greenland as it struggled to move the football

2 — Punts by Prescott as it had little trouble driving downfield

16 — First downs by Prescott

During that time, the Pirates (8-4) earned a 3A-1 Conference championship, hosted a pair of playoff games and advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

“It was a good year. It was a hard year, but it was a good year,” Larkan said. “We felt like we should have done some things better, but at the end we won the conference and that’s kind of one of the biggest goals we set out to do.

“And we were playing on Thanksgiving, and that’s another thing. So you have to say it’s a good year.”

Greenland struggled to slow down Prescott (11-2), falling behind 49-0 before it scored its first touchdown toward the end of the third quarter. By then, the mercy rule was in effect.

Play of the Night: Greenland didn’t have many bright spots in the loss, but quarterback Darian Froud showed his dual-threat ability when he raced for a 24-yard touchdown run with 8 minutes, 35 seconds remaining. The senior finished his final game with 15 carries for 25 yards to go along with his 7-for-18 passing for 89 yards and two interceptions.

Injury Update: Larkan didn’t report any major injuries following the game.

Player of the Game: It’s hard to pick a Greenland player who stood out in Prescott’s one-sided win. However, running back Calvin Giddens is an option after rushing for 25 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. He also had two catches for 31 yards.

Notable: Despite the lopsided score, Greenland managed to force turnovers, recovering four fumbles and intercepting a pass. The Pirates, however, returned the favor with a pair of costly interceptions. ... Prescott wide receiver Lavarious Martin was a major target, catching five passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Both of his touchdown catches came in the second quarter. He also had a 5-yard touchdown run.

The Lingo: “We thought we might be close to equal up front, but they whooped us up front really bad. And that’s a credit to their guys because they’re big. Look at those guys. They’re big, and they’re fast.”
