— 100 YEARS AGO Nov. 23, 1912

WASHINGTON - That industrial training, often supposed to be a recent innovation in American education, was introduced into Indian schools in Arkansas 80 or 90 years ago, is shown by Stephen B. Weeks of the United States Bureau of Education in a bulletin entitled “History of Public School Education in Arkansas,” just issued. The boys in these early schools were taught the elements of agriculture, the girls needlework and domestic science, and all were instructed in the habits of industry, neatness and order.

50 YEARS AGO Nov. 23, 1962

Little Rock City Manager Ancil M. Douthit said today that the city would continue to enforce traffic laws “fairly and impartially” and would not relax its efforts. In a prepared statement, Douthit said that neither the Pulaski County Grand Jury or any public official had consulted with the city in regard to charges made yesterday by jury Foreman Charles R. Dyson. Dyson yesterday said that Little Rock traffic officers lacked discretion, and he was receiving many complaints from motorists over the number of tickets being issued.

25 YEARS AGO Nov. 23, 1987

PINE BLUFF - About 60 people from environmental, peace and religious groups gathered just outside the Pine Bluff Arsenal gate Sunday to protest the pending manufacture of a new nerve gas component. The meeting followed a 29.5-mile march by 14 citizens Sunday from near Redfield to the arsenal’s Stark Gate and a motorcade Saturday from the Veterans Cemetery in Little Rock to Redfield. The marchers gathered 117 signed cards of support from residents along Arkansas 365.

10 YEARS AGO Nov. 23, 2002

Most Arkansas school districts will be forced to make tough financial decisions after Thursday’s Arkansas Supreme Court ruling on school funding. They either must raise taxes - with or without a vote of the people - or rework their existing tax structure. Officials across the state spent much of Friday reviewing the Supreme Court decision.
