Goodwin scores 28; ’Cats roll

— Freshman Archie Goodwin (Sylvan Hills) scored 28 points and Alex Poythress added 20 to help No. 8 Kentucky rally past stubborn Morehead State 81-70 on Wednesday night.

Their biggest contributions came at the free-throw line as the much-hyped freshmen combined to convert 20 of 25 free throws to help the Wildcats (3-1) fight back several times against the Eagles (3-2) before steadily pulling away in the second half.

Julius Mays added 11 points, and freshman forward Nerlens Noel and Kyle Wiltjer each had nine. Noel also had 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Milton Chavis scored 23 points for Morehead State, which had runs of 16-0 in the first half and 11-4 to start the second. Maurice Lewis-Briggs added 13 points, and Drew Kelly had 10.

The Eagles committed 32 fouls, while the Wildcats - 31 of 41 from the line - had 12.

Lucas Troutman scored 17 points and Elon pulled away in the second half to beat South Carolina 65-53 in Columbia, S.C. The Phoenix (4-1) led by as many as 16 points in the second half, but South Carolina (3-1) cut the lead to 57-52 with 5:46 to play. From there, Elon capitalized on several Gamecocks turnovers and missed shots to put the game away. South Carolina forward Michael Carrera missed his third consecutive game since suffering a concussion in practice. Lakeem Jackson led the Gamecocks in scoring with 14 points. ... Olivier Hanlan scored 19 points, including the gamewinning free throw with 20 seconds left, and Boston College beat Auburn 50-49 in Boston. The victory snapped a threegame losing streak for the Eagles (2-3).Frankie Sullivan scored 23 for Auburn (2-3), including a four-point play to tie the game with 48 seconds left. But Hanlan was fouled driving to the basket, then made 1 of 2 free throws. Sullivan dribbled down the clock but almost got tied up; Rob Chubb kept the loose ball from going out of bounds but Sullivan’s desperation shot at the buzzer went off the front of the rim. ... Sheldon McClellan scored 19 points off the bench to give Texas its first victory in three days at the Maui Invitational, 69-55 over Mississippi State in Lahaina, Hawaii. The Longhorns (3-2) went up by 18 points in the first half and coasted in the last 20 minutes, shooting 50 percent for the game. Mississippi State (1-4) made onethird of its shots (17 of 51), improving in the second half after making only five field goals in the first 20 minutes. Roquez Johnson led the Bulldogs with 18 points, starting after limping off the court with help in the second half of Tuesday’s loss to Marquette.

James Southerland scored a careerhigh 22 points and nabbed five steals, Michael Carter-Williams added 10 points and nine assists, and No. 6 Syracuse beat visiting Princeton 73-53. Syracuse (3-0) won its 24th consecutive game in the Carrier Dome and boosted its record to 31-0 against the Ivy League at the Dome.
