— 100 YEARS AGO Nov. 21, 1912

In a statement issued yesterday, Gov. Geo. W. Donaghey announced that he would recommend to the next legislature that it petition Congress to take over the city of Hot Springs and control it. He also declared that if elected to the United States Senate, he would do everything in his power to bring such a transfer to a successful termination. The governor’s statement was in reply to articles published by Memphis and Hot Springs newspapers severely criticizing him because he prevented the charging of admission to the automobile races in Hot Springs last Sunday. The governor’s action, it is said, caused a loss estimated at $6,000 to the State Fair Association.

50 YEARS AGO Nov. 21, 1962

State Highway Director F.R. Oliver expects to get a lot of conversation, if not a steak dinner, out of Texas State Highway Engineer D.C. Greer. Some time ago Oliver and Greer entered into a friendly wager on which state would contract first for its portion of a joint project, the construction of an interchange across the state line at Texarkana, in connectionwith Interstate Highway 30. Oliver believes he is the winner of the challenge thrown up by Greer because the Arkansas Highway Commission let a contract Aug. 2.

25 YEARS AGO Nov. 21, 1987 WASHINGTON - The last Air Force silo used for the now-retired Titan II missile will be destroyed Tuesday by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Pentagon said Friday. The silo, located near Quitman (Cleburne County), Ark., “will be demolished using approximately 6,700 pounds of explosives,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

10 YEARS AGO Nov. 21, 2002

Officials at Little Rock National Airport, Adams Field, began drafting a letter Wednesday seeking extra time to comply with a federal law requiring all checked baggage to be screened for explosives. The Little Rock airport and other airports around the nation lobbied Congress furiously for an extension of the Dec. 31 deadline, which they said was unreasonable. Without more time, the rush to meet the deadline could invite chaos and delays at airport ticket counters, they argued.
