— Richelle Cooper could be the best-kept secret in the state.

At least for now. With a few more dominating games like she had Tuesday night, she won’t be an unknown for long.

Cooper, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, scored a game-high 21 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter, to lead Shiloh Christian to a 51-44 win over Prairie Grove on Champions Court.

“Richelle has no idea what her potential is,” Lady Saints coach Mat Stewart said. “She’s got a high upside. She’s put in the work and it paid off tonight for us.”

As a freshman last season, Cooper saw some limited action, but could not play for long stretches. On Tuesday, other than a short break early in the fourth quarter, she played almost the entire game.

Her presence inside was the key in the fourth quarter as Shiloh Christian (2-0) held a short-handed Prairie Grove team without a field goal the entire quarter. Prairie Grove (2-1) was without two key players and suited just seven players.

Shiloh Christian jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game and led by as many as 13 points to start the third quarter when Cooper powered inside to give the Lady Saints a 27-13 lead with 7 minutes, 45 seconds left in the third quarter.

Prairie Grove played a zone for the first half to try and conserve energy, said Lady Tigers coach Kevin Froud. But the 13-point deficit forced Froud to employ his normal man-to-man defense and the switch paid off rapidly.

Macie Kultgen and Whitnee Fitts drained back-to-back 3-pointers to fuel a 9-0 Prairie Grove run, then Kultgen hit a short jumper in the lane to give the Lady Tigers their first lead, 33-32 with 3:02 left in the third quarter.

But the Lady Tigers could never pull ahead by more than three points as they went cold from the field.

“I guess our legs just got to us,” Froud said. “We had some opportunities, they just didn’t fall in.”

Shiloh Christian took the lead for good when Cooper scored inside for a 43-42 lead, then her three-point play extended the lead to 46-42. The Lady Saints sealed the win at the free-throw line.

“She’s hard to handle in there,” Froud said of Cooper. “When in doubt, chunk it to the rim and she’s going to get it. When you can do that, it helps them and it hurts us.”
