PUBLIC VIEWPOINT: Christians Not Just In One Party

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

I just read a letter by Phyllis Farish [Nov. 16] in which she states that the presidential election was lost not only by the Republicans, but also the Democrats and Americans in general. She appeared to be making the point that Christian values were not considered by the voters in their decision to cast their votes. Why do people make such simplistic statements?

I tire of hearing that one party represents Christian beliefs and the other does not. It is much more complicated than that. I would dare say that many of the people working in our federal government of both parties today would not represent true “Christian values” as they are defi ned anyway. Ms. Farish also directs most of her letter exclusively to Christians since she states “you athiests may stop reading now.” She goes on to encourage her fellow believers that she and they are “children of light.” Is this light only intended for some? Jesus himself would not have been so “exclusive.”

Unfortunately, that attitude is what turns many people away from Christianity.
