Animal Shelter Director Resigns

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

— Washington County officials begin looking for a new animal shelter director this week. Shonna Harvey, the shelter’s director, resigned two months after the facility opened.

She resigned Friday, said George Butler, county attorney. Neither Butler nor Washington County Judge Marilyn Edwards could comment further about Harvey’s resignation, Butler said.

Harvey could not be reached for comment.

The county hired Harvey in late May while the building was under construction. The shelter’s 2012 budget shows the county pays the director an annual salary of $42,474.

The shelter opened in mid-September. Harvey told members of Washington County’s Quorum Court last month the shelter filled to capacity within a few days.

The shelter took in 200 animals and euthanized 6.5 percent, according to a short report dated September and October on the shelter’s website. Of those euthanized, seven cats and six dogs were untreatable.

Residents adopted 12 dogs, 12 cats and owners reclaimed 14 others. The county transferred 10 animals to a rescue.

The shelter’s office manager will run the day-to-day activities until a new director is hired, Butler said.
