— 100 YEARS AGO Nov. 19, 1912

FORT SMITH - A brown polka dot necktie led to the arrest today of Joe Fogarty on a charge of burglary. An attempt was made Saturday night to enter the residence of a wealthy family. The doorknob was broken, and the would-be burglar wrapped the necktie around the knob in an unsuccessful attempt to open the door. The tie was left tied to the door. It bore the label of a local haberdasher, who testified he had sold it to Fogarty Saturday night.

50 YEARS AGO Nov. 19, 1962

Dr. Neil Compton, Bentonville physician and president of the Ozark Society to Preserve the Buffalo, will present a film and talk urging preservation of north Arkansas’ famous Buffalo River at a meeting of the Little Rock Engineers Club in the Hotel Albert Pike today at noon. The Buffalo River area is being considered for inclusion in the National Park System and the Society is boosting the economic, social and recreational benefits to Arkansas.

25 YEARS AGO Nov. 19, 1987

PINE BLUFF - A man armed with a toy pistol robbed a convenience store Tuesday night but dropped his loot and fled when a police officer drew his service weapon and ordered the man to halt. According to a police report, a black male entered the Walnut Street Get ‘N Go carrying a newspaper draped over his right hand. He prodded the cashier with his left hand and told the woman to give him all the money in the cash register. As the man was leaving the store, a police officer, who was meeting his wife at the store, ordered him to halt. When the officer drew his weapon, the man dropped the money from his left hand and the toy pistol from his right and ran from the parking lot.

10 YEARS AGO Nov. 19, 2002

WASHINGTON - Organized labor accused Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Monday of lowering wages and working conditions for millions of Americans, and it promised a vigorous attempt to unionize the retailer. Labor’s latest effort will begin Thursday with about 100 events in 40 cities - none in Arkansas. An event was defined as anything from a boycott to a talk with individual employees about their right to participate in a union.
