UPDATE: Meningitis victim identified

A NorthWest Arkansas Community College student died Sunday evening from bacterial meningitis, according to a news release from the college.

Roger Morris, the Washington County coroner, identified the student as Conner Burchfield, 18, of Fayetteville.

College officials are contacting people who may have had close contact with the student, the news release stated. High-traffic areas and areas visited by the student are being disinfected.

Steven Hinds, college public relations director, said Nov. 13 is the last time the college has record of Burchfield being on campus. He said the student signed into the Academic Success Computer lab at that time. The college has closed the lab for sterilization.

"They are cleaning and wiping that down and disinfection for any remaining germs," Hinds said.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the student, his family, and friends during this difficult time,” said Steven Gates, senior vice president for learning and provost.
