County judge: University not immune from property taxes

Washington County Judge Marilyn Edwards today upheld the Board of Equalization and denied the University of Arkansas’ appeal for immunity or exemption from real and personal property taxes.

In separate hearings before the Board of Equalization in October and Edwards, last week, the university said it should be immune or exempt because it is state-owned property which is not subject to ad valorem taxes.

The university could appeal Edward’s decision to the Washington County Circuit Court. There was no immediate reaction from the university.

At issue is a total of 65 parcels which Assessor Jeff Williams has declared are subject to real or personal property taxes totaling about $170,000 based on an assessed valuation of $3.3 million. The Washington County Equalization Board upheld Williams’ denial of exemption on these 65 properties.
