Flags to fly at half-staff for Arkansas soldier killed in Afghanistan

— Federal officials say a Kansas-based soldier from Arkansas has been killed in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense said Sunday that 23-year-old Spc. Joseph A. Richardson of Booneville died Friday in Paktika province.

Richardson was killed alongside two other soldiers assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, at Fort Riley, Kan.

Officials say the men died from injuries they suffered when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.

The governor’s office announced Monday that flags will be at half-staff until sundown on Wednesday.
