Second thoughts

— Nets mascot doesn’t shine as a Knight

The recently relocated Brooklyn Nets have been considered purveyors of cool, from rapper Jay-Z being a partial owner to their ultramodern home at the Barclays Center to the herringbone pattern on their home court.

But the reception to their new mascot has been, well, less than stellar.

Here’s a snippet from sportschump.net:

“Who were the brainiacs inside the Brooklyn boardroom that decided having a masked, leather-clad, shield-wielding weirdo running around the arena was a good idea and how much are these people getting paid to do their jobs? Apparently, Marvel Comics invented the character.

Couldn’t they have consulted Beyonce before wheeling this leather-faced Lancelot onto the court?

“And what’s Brooklyn Knight even mean anyway? Aren’t most people afraid to roam the streets of Brooklyn in the middle of the night? It pains me to say this considering I grew up with a comic book collection that would rival your average Comic Con nerd but if the Knight is the best they could come up with, I’d love to see what was left on the cutting room floor.”

This might be one of the “99 Problems” Jay-Z raps about.

Doggone it

If Miami Marlins pitcher Mark Buehrle is scouring for a way to avoid his part in a salary-dump trade to Toronto, there might be a solution:

Ontario’s ban on pit bulls.

Buehrle and his wife are proud owners of four rescued dogs, including a 2-year-old American Staffordshire terrier, which is banned in the Canadian province under the Dog Owner’s Liability Act, according to the Toronto Star.

Miami has a similar ban, so the lefty and his wife settled in a house 50 miles north of Miami in order to keep Slater in the fold. And Jamie Buehrle started a petition to get Miami-Dade County to change the law.

“We were lucky enough to be able to afford to buy a house outside of Miami-Dade County so we could keep Slater,” Jamie Buehrle wrote, according to the Star. “Many families aren’t as fortunate, and they love their dogs just as much.”

Mark Buehrle hasn’t made statements publicly about the deal, but watching Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria blow up his team - again - and the possibility of losing his pooch might not sit well with the veteran.
