Cabot takes fast lane to victory

— Cabot’s layup-drill offense put North Little Rock away early Saturday in the final of the Heavenly Hoops at Mount St. Mary.

Senior forward Eliot Taylor scored 14 points as the Lady Panthers earned a 67-43 victory.

The Lady Panthers scored 46 points from inside the lane and their lead was never less than 12 after the 1:30 mark of the first quarter.

“Eliot and Jaylin [Bridges] run our team so well and they keep everybody involved,” Cabot Coach Carla Crowder said. “They just did a superb job today.”

North Little Rock’s Tashika Harris hit a 3-footer 18 seconds into the game, but Cabot scored 16 of the next 17 points. Sophomore Alyssa Hamilton scored 10 of her 12 points in the game’s first 6:30 to help the Lady Panthers claim an 18-6 lead.

Cabot (3-0) out rebounded North Little Rock 30-19 and the Lady Panthers forced 27 turnovers.

“We’ve been working hard on [rebounding], but I don’t know if we can always do that,” Crowder said.“We’re very fortunate. We played well and they didn’t play real well.”

Cabot’s first 18 points came on layups, put backs or short jumpers in the lane. The Lady Panthers attempted only one three-pointer, which Bridges made midway through the second quarter to give Cabot a 31-8 lead.

“We never could get settled down,” North Little Rock Coach Daryl Fimple said. “Being young and when some calls don’t go your way, you get frustrated and it showed. But Cabot played real well.”

Senior Ally Van Enk added 10 points for Cabot while Bridges and Danielle McWilliams scored nine points each. Senior Abbey Allgood grabbed 6 rebounds, made 5 steals and had 4 assists.

Senior guard Jasmin Maysled North Little Rock with 13 points while sophomore Malica Monk added 10 points and made six steals.

North Little Rock (3-1) played without senior guard Sasha Giles, who is the only returning starter from last season. Giles took a hard fall in Wednesday’s semifinal victory over Star City.
