Victory easier for Greenwood

— The second matchup this season between Greenwood and Little Rock Parkview wasn’t as close as the first, but Bulldogs Coach Rick Jones was just fine with that.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 58-21 victory Friday night in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs at Smith-Robinson Stadium.

“I give those guys a lot of credit,” Jones said. “They play hard and you have to come up with a sound plan to beat them. They have a lot to be proud about and they played very hard.”

The Bulldogs, who extended their winning streak to 36 games, started the game with a long opening drive. They used 20 plays to put the ball inside the 10-yard line, but were forced to turn to Logan Flatte for a 25-yard field goal and 3-0 lead.

It was a huge boost for Parkview (4-8), which lost to Greenwood (12-0) by just 13 points at home in Week 5.

“That was a big lift,” Parkview Coach William Hardiman said. “This is Greenwood we are playing. But you can’t make too many mistakes because you get yourself out of the game, and we did that.”

It was a tough decision for Jones to just go for the field goal after playing such a tight game the first time around.

“The way they score, it’s hard to just settle for a field goal,” Jones said. “We know how fast they can score.”

Parkview had its big scoring plays — a 68-yard touchdown catch by Tevin Jackson and a 61-yard touchdown catch by Rashaad Earls — but it wasn’t enough to keep up with Greenwood.

The Bulldogs, who play El Dorado next week, built a 45-7 halftime lead utilizing the passing game with quarterback Jabe Burgess and wide receivers Austin Harris and Drew Morgan.

Burgess finished 13 for 17 with 216 passing yards and 3 touchdowns. Harris finished with 6 catches for 106 yards and 2 touchdowns while Morgan finished with 74 receiving yards and 1 touchdown on 5 catches.

“I was proud of how Jabe bounced around back there,” Jones said. “We felt we had a good matchup with a lot of man-to-man coverage. I told him to stay in there and he would find people open.”

Parkview was limited to just 20 plays and 128 offensive yards in the first half while Greenwood gained 301 yards on 41 plays.

After Greenwood was held to the field goal, Greenwood’s Matt Sisco blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown and 10-0 lead with 6:27 left in the first quarter. That provided plenty of momentum for the Bulldogs.

“That’s the one I thought broke their back,” Jones said of the touchdown. “That was a big play.”

Burgess connected with Harris for a 28-yard touchdown pass on the next drive for Greenwood, converting fourth-and-19 and making the lead 17-0 with 1:15 left in the first quarter.

Parkview quarterback Caelon Harden found Jackson for a 68-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 17-7 with 51 seconds left in the first quarter.

JONESBORO 45, LAKE HAMILTON 21

JONESBORO — Martin Stafford rushed for three touchdowns to help power Jonesboro (9-2) to a Class 6A playoff victory over Lake Hamilton.

D.J. Anderson rushed for 165 yards and scored on a 60-yard run for Jonesboro. Stafford rushed for 138 yards.

Stafford scored first on a 1-yard run and Will Brandt kicked the first of his six extra points. Lake Hamilton tied the game to end the first quarter 7-7.

Brandt put Jonesboro ahead for good early in the second quarter with a 32-yard field goal. Anderson’s 60-yard scoring run followed. Kevontae Pope then returned a punt 60 yards for a Jonesboro touchdown. Stafford closed out the half with a 13-yard run with 1:25 left after an interception by Shawn Hill.

Stafford broke free for an 86-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Jerome Phillips added a 42-yard run for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for Jonesboro.
