Prescott piles up the points

— Prescott’s L.J. Martin caught two passes for touchdowns and returned two interceptions for scores as the Curley Wolves (10-2) pummeled Mayflower 69-24 in Class 3A playoff action Friday night.

In a matchup of the state’s highest-scoring offenses in Class 3A, it was Prescott’s defense that kept Mayflower sophomore quarterback Adam Dycus in check long enough to let its offense light up the scoreboard.

Mayflower (6-6) led 3-0 on Matthew Post’s 28-yard field goal. By the time Mayflower scored again, Prescott led 32-3.

Martin gave Prescott the lead for good on a 20-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Trevor Rucker, who was 19 for 25 for 217 yards and 4 touchdowns. Rucker hooked up with Martin again on a 31-yard score and a 24-3 lead. In all, Martin had 4 catches for 64 yards.

That was on offense. Defensively, Martin picked off a Dycus throw and raced 94 yards for the Curley Wolves’ second score. His second interception return, a 66-yarder, made it 56-10 late in the first half.

By halftime, it was 63-10.

Dycus, who entered the game averaging 353 passing yards per game, finished 18 for 40 for 194 yards with 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

Dycus spent most of the night running from Prescott’s front seven, which put pressure on him throughout the night.
