Film takes a look at musical ‘genius’
Northwest Arkansas residents will have the opportunity to view the documentary Conlon Nancarrow: Virtuoso of the Player Piano at 6:15 p.m. Monday at the Fayetteville Public Library.
Nancarrow, an Arkansas native, drew praise from such luminaries as Frank Zappa and Gyorgy Ligeti. He was awarded the first MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grants for his music in 1982.
The film was made by University of Arkansas music department faculty member James Greeson. It debuted at Nancarrow Weekend at the Southbank Centre in London and was nominated for a regional Emmy Award.
Greeson will be on hand at the library screening to answer questions about Nancarrow, whom he first met in 1983. He will be joined by Dale Carpenter of the UA journalism department, who served as the film’s associate producer, and Robert Ginsburg, who narrated the film.
