Parkview takes down Hall without MVP effort

Friday, November 16, 2012

— Roshunda Johnson earned MVP honors of the Little Rock Girls Invitational, but her Little Rock Parkview teammates can claim most of the credit for the Lady Patriots’ 56-52 victory Thursday night.

Sophomore post player Sausha Davey scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and senior Derriel Banyard connected on 3 three-pointers to help lift Parkview over host Little Rock Hall in the title game.

Johnson, who had a combined 39 points in the Lady Patriots’ victories over Little Rock McClellan and Little Rock Central, finished with only nine points Thursday, but she did have a game-high five steals.

“I wasn’t on tonight,” said Johnson, who had signed a national letter of intent to play basketball with Oklahoma State on Wednesday. “But other people stepped up when we really needed them to keep fighting.”

“Ro is going to play both ends. That’s what I like about her,” said Parkview boys Coach Al Flanigan, who is filling in for girls Coach Lahoma Howard while she recovers from an ankle injury. “Ro is the best guard in the state. They can say what they want to about anybody else cause I think she can play at both ends.”

Parkview (3-0) was 20 of 30 from the free-throw line while Hall went to the line only nine times. Parkview also out rebounded Hall 33-31, including an 18-11 advantage in the first half.

Thursday was a near breakout night for Davey, who scored 14 points and had eight rebounds in the first half. Hall (2-1) led 9-7 with 11:12 left in the first half, but Parkview (3-0) scored the next 11 points and never trailed again.

“I don’t think it will be too long before Sausha has a complete game,” Johnson said. “She’s capable of it. She just needs to keep working.”

“Sausha got us started,” Flanigan said. “And then she got down on herself because she got in foul trouble in the second half. But she gave us that big run and we just rode it from there.”

Hall guard Tyler Scaife, who had scored 33 points in Wednesday’s semifinal victory over Jacksonville, was limited to six points in the first half by the Lady Patriots. Scaife finished with a team-high 20 points, but the 5-8 senior never made it to the free-throw line.

“If she gets to the line, she’s going to average 30 points a game, easy,” Flanigan said of Scaife. “She’s that good of a player. But we used a box-and-1, we had a 3-2 match up, we tried a 2-3 matchup, we were throwing everything at her.”

Parkview led 33-18 at halftime and extended its lead to 42-24 with 10:43 to play on a 5-footer from Johnson. Hall attempted to rally from that point, scoring six consecutive points.

Banyard helped quell the Lady Warriors’ rally, hitting a three-pointer with 8:05 to play that pushed Parkview’s lead back to 15, 45-30.

“That couldn’t have come at a better time,” Flanigan said. “We were starting to stall.”

Banyard and guard Levrick Grisby each finished with 14 points for the Lady Patriots. Grisby was 8 of 9 from the free-throw line and she also had three steals and three assists.

Kiara Moore and Rakia Lane each finished with nine points for Hall. Princess Cole and Tierra Coffey each grabbed six rebounds for Hall.
