— Anna Thomas and Kate Lacina have decided to go their separate ways to continue their softball careers, but they will still continue to be Lady Tigers.

The Bentonville players, both of whom were all-conference selections last season, completed their college decisions together Thursday afternoon when they signed their letters of intent at the Tiger Athletic Complex. Thomas signed with Memphis, while Lacina signed with Ouachita Baptist.

“We love both of these girls in our program,” Bentonville coach Kent Early said. “They have been a big reason behind our success, and they have been committed to softball.

“They put in the time during the summer, during our season, travel ball. ... I mean, they have become better, and now they have the results to prove it.”

Thomas, a first baseman, chose Memphis after considering Utah Valley University, a member of the Great West Conference, and the University of the Ozarks.

She will be one of Bentonville’s top returning hitters. Thomas finished the season second on the team with six home runs — all during conference play.

“It was how comfortable I felt when I walked around campus,” Thomas said. “I could see myself being there every day and with the softball team, in general.

“It’s well-organized there, and the coaches are really cool. They made me feel right at home, as well as the girls.”

Lacina set a state record in the spring when she drove in seven runs in one game. She mostly played outfielder for the Lady Tigers, but she was a first baseman while she played on travel teams.

She could see seeing action at both positions at Ouachita, as well as time as a designated player. She chose Ouachita after she received offers from some smaller schools.

“Finding this college was the perfect choice for me,” Lacina said. “It feels really great to have that campus come into my life.

“It’s just a great atmosphere. I love the college and the coach there is great. Academic-wise, it’s a great college, so it’s really a great place for me there.”
