McCoy celebrates 100th birthday

Marie McCoy of Winslow will turn 100 years old on Nov. 23.

A party is planned to celebratethe occasion at noon Nov. 24 at the West Fork Community Center, 222 Webber St.

McCoy was born Nov. 23, 1912, and lived in Booneville most of her life.

Friends and family are invited to attendthe party, which will be catered by Catfish Hole Restaurant.

No gifts, please.

McLane honored as Tutor of Year

Lucy McLane of Siloam Springs has been named Tutor of the Year by the Arkansas Bar AssociationLaw Related Education Committee.

McLane won for her work at Dogwood Literacy Council, where she has been tutoring for 10 years.

John Marter, the council’s executive director, estimates that McLane hasspent 4,000 to 5,000 hours tutoring for the group.

She’s currently tutoring about 10 people in English as a second language and basic education.

Madison joins ERC board

Eva Madison, recently re-elected justice of the peace in Washington County, has joined the boardof the Elizabeth Richardson Center, the nonprofit organization has announced.

Madison is a part of Littler Mendelson, a Fayetteville firm specializing in employment and labor law, an adjunct professor at the University of Arkansas School of Law and a frequent speaker on employment law.

She also serves as a volunteer attorney with Legal Aid of Arkansas and was a founding member of the Animal League of Washington County.

Honors College honors faculty

The Honors College at the University of Arkansas has announced its 2012 recipients of the Honors College Distinguished Faculty Awards.

Winners are Gisela Erf, the Tyson Endowed Professor of Avian Immunology in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences; Christa Hestekin, an assistant professor of chemical engineering in the College of Engineering; and Hoyt Purvis, a professor of journalism in the J.

William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

Javier Reyes, vice provost for distance education and an associate professor of economics in the Sam M. Walton College of Business, was honored with the Honors College Distinguished Leadership Award as well.

Each professor was recognized for his or her active support of honors students and their projects. Each received a bronze medallion and $1,000 to support undergraduate research.

Playwright’s work debuts in Ohio

Dan Borengasser’s play, “Goat Song Revel,” won third prize in the first Ohio State Newark New Play Contest, and the theater department at OSU-Newark will present the world premiere of the play Nov. 23.

The play is the story of the biblical Job who finds himself in a Greek drama but isn’t sure whether it’ll turn out to be a tragedy or comedy.

Borengasser has added Hellenic underpinnings to the story and replaced some of Job’s misery with comedy - and even romance.

Performances are planned at 8 p.m. Nov. 23-24 and Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at the school’s Black BoxTheater. Tickets cost $5.

Commander has

Springdale ties

Chief Bridget Lott is the new Northern Division Commander for the California Highway Patrol. Lott is the daughter of Vernon and Shirley Lott of Springdale.

Lott has been a member of the Highway Patrol for 29 years and has previously served as assistant chief in the Golden Gate Division.

She has also served as commander of the Redwood City office and as a commander at California State Highway Patrol headquarters overseeing motorcycle safety, grants, transportation planning and older driver safety.
