E. LAVERNE CHITWOOD, 85, of Maumelle, Arkansas, died Sunday, November 11, 2012, at UAMS, in Little Rock. Mrs. Chitwood was born August 21, 1927, in White County, Arkansas, a daughter of the late Elmer Lynn McDaniel and Vesta “Beck” (LaFerney) Thurman, and Vernon “Bob” Thurman (her beloved step-father) of McRae, Ark.

LaVerne loved color and culture and coffee with avid, lifelong appreciation. She loved her family, her friends and her God, though, so much more deeply with a quiet, rich, passion which blessed and touched all those who knew her.

A member of the First Christian Church, 1500 N. Mississippi St., Little Rock, Arkansas since the 1950’s, she served as a Deaconess, Christian Education teacher, CYF leader, & many roles within the CWF and Circle 6 over the years. She sang in the Chancellery Choir and the Glorias. She was blessed to have Dr. Searcy McBurnett bring in the First Christian Church of Maumelle to her residence at Stonehaven Assisted Living for the past four years.

Over 64 years, she owned and operated LaVerne’s Beauty Salon and Chitwood’s School of Beauty in Little Rock. She was a retired beautician at the age of 81 because she had to retire; her work was her love and purpose second only to her family and faith. In the early days of her profession, she was one of the very few New York trained stylists in Little Rock.

Survivors are her son & daughter-in-law, G. Boyd Chitwood, Ed.D. (Chrissy Chitwood) of Tampa, Fla.; her daughter & son-in-law, Berta Chitwood-Lemke (Chris Lemke) of Conway; her grandchildren, Luke Chitwood (Ashley Chitwood) of New York, Sarah Chitwood of Tampa, Fla., Moriah Chitwood of Clinton, Miss., and Joshua Chitwood of Birmingham, Ala. Also survived by a sister, Hilton Duggar of Beebe, Ark.; and brothers, Johnny Mc-Daniel (Rita McDaniel) of Cordova, Tenn., and Dr. Jim Thurman (Susan Thurman) of Glasgow, Ky.

She is also survived by nieces Jan Eastwood (Bill), Anne Woods, Shirley Sanders (Leon), Patricia Amburn (Mike), Sandy McClendon (Kirk), Michelle Pearson (Ray), Terri Foulks, Katie James (Reed), Lindsay Thurman, and Shelly Twitchin (Marcus); and nephews Jim Woods (Jane), Gary Duggar, Danny Bell (Debbie), Rob Bell, Adam McDaniel, Jason McDaniel, Les McDaniel (Beth), John McDaniel (Carrie), Vernon McDaniel (Melissa), Kevin McDaniel, and Carson Thurman (Allison). LaVerne was preceded in death by her beloved, servantminded and sharp witted husband of 51 years, Richard B. Chitwood of Little Rock, Ark.; sisters Doris Crisco of McRae, Ark., Josephine Bell of Searcy, Ark., Billie Jean Faulks of Mesquite, Texas, and Wanda Locke of Beebe, Ark.; brothers Tommy McDaniel of Cabot, Ark., and baby Elmer Lee McDaniel of Griffithsville, Ark.; as well as several nephews.

LaVerne was richly blessed through her life with loving and loyal friends from church, from the beauty business, and from her various activities of life. She was also very well-cared for in her later years by the kind and skillful people of Stonehaven Assisted Living in Maumelle.

Ms. EDNA LOUISE COOK, 89, of Little Rock, departed this life November 9, 2012 at Arkansas Hospice. She is survived by her four children, Louis “Uncle Johnny” Cook, Robert Cook and wife Carolyn, Edwin Cook, and Marsha Dunnick, all of Little Rock. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.

Ms. Edna Cook was preceded in death by her daughter, Helen Faye Cook, one grandson, Harold Brown, and daughter-in-law, Shirley Cook.

RICHARD STANLEY GILLESPIE, age 67, of Sherwood, Ark, passed away Sunday, November 11, 2012. He was born October 5, 1945, in Paragould, Ark., to parents, Billie Gillespie and Imogene Penney Higgins. He enjoyed the simple things of life and worked for many years as a truck driver which he loved. He was a devoted son who loved his mother very much.

Richard (Stan) is survived by his mother Imogene Higgins, daughter, Shannon Gillespie, and his sister Linda Bird. He is preceded in death by stepfather, Nolon Higgins, stepbrothers, Billy and Eddie Higgins, as well as his father Billie Gillespie, and grandparents.

CARLA JEAN AKEN GREEN HAMPTON SOLOMON HALL of Little Rock, passed away early on the morning of November 13, 2012 after a short illness. Carla grew up in Elkville, Illinois and spent over 30 years with AT&T and Southwestern Bell Telephone. After retiring, she and her husband owned and operated the Old Stuff Store in the Ferndale community west of Little Rock.

Carla was a devoted wife to Ray Hall, the mother of Terry Green of Columbus, Ohio (deceased); Barry Green of Greenville, Texas; Regina Hampton of Austin, Texas; and Rebecca Brogdon of Los Angeles, California.

CHARLES DAVID HAVER IV, 46, of North Little Rock, born June 3, 1966 in North Little Rock to parents, C.D. and Jan Haver, passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2012.

He was preceded in death by his father, C.D. Haver III. DOROTHY JOHNSON, 83, of North Little Rock passed away Monday, November 12, 2012. She was born November 22, 1928. Mrs. Johnson was a very loving mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and friend to many. She was always glad to lend a helping hand.

CHARLES “CHUCK” PERKINS passed away on November 12, 2012 at his home in Mabelvale. Chuck was born to parents, Walter and Alice Perkins on September 11, 1933 in Stomping Ground, Ky.

Chuck leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Shirley Perkins of Mabelvale, Ark., four children; Charlie Perkins of Nicholsville, Kentucky, Paula Malone of St. Louis, Mo., Tom Perkins and wife, Sonja of Springfield, Mo., Gina Brown of Mablevale, Ark., nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews as well as a host of other friends and family members all who loved him and will miss him greatly. He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister; Jeannette Miller.

Chuck was considered crazy by those who loved him because of his keen sense of humor and ready wit. He was always acting silly and pulling pranks on his friends and family. One of his close friends said that when Chuck got to heaven, heaven got a whole lot funnier. He enjoyed gardening and had a competitive streak that showed up as he raced to have the first red tomato of the season. Chuck was retired from New Terry Auto Care which he owned and operated for many years. He loved helping people, his family was dear to him and he loved spending time with them.

DEAN D. WHITLEY, age 83, of Little Rock, formerly of Arkadelphia, died Tuesday. He was born November 22, 1928 in Hot Spring County the son of Guy and Rellie Hardin Whitley. He was a retired newspaper printer having worked for the Southern Standard in Arkadelphia, the Arkansas Democrat and retiring form the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Brookwood Baptist Church in Little Rock.

CABOT — Gary Lynn Mahoney, 50, of Cabot died Tuesday, November 13, 2012. He was born August 20, 1962 in North Little Rock to Connie Thornton Mahoney and the late George Roy Mahoney. Everything Gary did was for his children. His main enjoyments were sitting around the campfire chipping rocks, a cup of coffee in hand with his best friend, Aden.

Gary is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Mahoney and life partner, Mindy and their son, Aden; his son Scotty Mahoney and his wife, Brittney; two brothers and two sisters; his mother, Connie Mahoney; numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and the mother of his children, Dorothy Avery.

CONWAY — Glen Bolden, 87, of Conway, went to be with the Lord November 14, 2012. Glen D. Bolden was born September 27, 1925 to John and Bessie (Barton) Bolden at Tyronza, Ark. Glen was a U.S. Army Veteran who honorably served during WWII. A member of E Company, 349 Infantry, 88 Division, he fought in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operations Italian Campaign. During his active duty as an 88th Division “Blue Devil,” he received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Battle Stars and the Sharp Shooter Medal.

Glen was employed by the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department for 30 years, until retiring in 1985. He was an avid gardener and also enjoyed working on his lawn. Glen is survived by his wife Ollie Vee Bolden; daughters Martha Longing of Conway and Jolynda (Dwight) Davis of Conway; a son, Mark Shaw of Snellville, Ga; a brother, Pete Owens of Fisher, Ark.; sisters, Betty Sue Hinds of Olive Branch, Miss., Barbara Ann Dean of Harrisburg and Mary Jo (Gene) Crouch of Harrisburg; “Papa Glen” was also the proud grandfather of nine and great-grandfather of 12. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Gene and John Mervin Bolden.

CONWAY — Anita Jean Opitz Etheridge, 86, of Conway, passed away Tuesday, November 13. 2012. Anita was born on July 2, 1926 in Conway to Henry Grady and Lera Elaine Opitz (Bowen). In 1947 she married Wade M. Etheridge, an Army Veteran of WWII. She was a retired school teacher who taught at Conway High School and the Little Rock Air Force Base.

CROSSETT — Velma Odle Easterling, age 94, of Crossett, Ark., passed away on November 11, 2012, at Pinewood Health and Rehabilitation. She was born on September 8, 1918, in Blocker, Texas, to her parents, C.C. and Allie Odle. Mrs. Easterling worked for the Crossett Company and retired from Georgia Pacific after 35 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

HUMNOKE — Elizabeth “Liz” Hansell, 82, passed away of natural causes at her home in Humnoke, Arkansas, on November 12, 2012, surrounded by family members at her bedside. She was born June 30, 1930, in Gumwoods Township, Lonoke County, Arkansas, to Robert Odie and Mary Ella Underwood. She married Jesse Paul “Giggs” Hansell on August 21, 1949.

She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Paula Rail and Danny, Sandra Freund and Robert, Vickie Raker and James, and her son and his wife, Roger Hansell and Mary Anne. “Granny” is survived by her grandchildren and their spouses, Cindy Lock, Beth Rail, Paul Freund and Sara, Jessica Maynard and Blake, Brooke Jackson and Scott, and Misty Hansell. “Big Granny” is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Andrea Lock, Dalton Rail, Lauren Maynard, Cameron Maynard, Haley Freund, Caitlyn Freund, Willa Jackson and Kaydence Manuel. She is survived by her sisters and their spouses, Mary Lee Vaught and Leon, Frances England and David, and her brothers and their spouses, Clarence and Dorothy Underwood, Lewis and Betty Underwood. Liz is preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Paul Hansell; her parents, Robert Odie and Mary Underwood; and siblings Figi Underwood, Audrey Skinner, Dorothy Ingle, Kenneth Underwood and Gene Underwood.

Liz was a life long member of Rowes Chapel Church of Humnoke, Arkansas. After her retirement from Remington Arms, she actively pursued her love of vegetable and flower gardening. She loved canning the vegetables and preserving jams and jellies to give to her family and friends. Nothing made Liz happier than big family gatherings, which allowed her to prepare delicious meals for the enjoyment of family, as well as for invited friends. Liz could always be found in front of her TV when the Razorbacks were playing. She was a highly enthusiastic fan of the team. She loved and found great joy in spending time with small children. She shared many happy stories of visits from young neighbors, Benjamin and Noah Fulmer.

JONESBORO — Mrs. Deborah Landry, 67, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2012, at her residence after a thirteen year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Mrs. Landry was born on August 10, 1945, in Peoria, Illinois, to the late Bruce Anderson and Virginia Wynkoop Royer. She had lived in Jonesboro since 1990 when she moved here from Zachary, Louisiana. She was a graduate of Louisiana State University of Baton Rouge with a degree in Medical Technology and was a member and president of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Mrs. Landry received her Master’s in Health Care Administration in 1998 from the College of St. Francis in Memphis, Tenn. She was a life member of the Junior Auxiliary and an avid volunteer where needed. She was a founder and a very instrumental part of organizing the start of Daffodil Days in Jonesboro, 21 years ago as a member of the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Landry was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. She lived through all the many long years of her battle with her disease the same way she always lived her life — with courage, tenacity, grace, patience and a sweetness of spirit, a steadfast love for family and friends, for mankind and a boundless faith in God.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert J. Landry Sr. She is survived by three children, Robert J. Landry, Jr. and his wife Aimee’ Duvernay Landry of Slidell, La., Amy Landry Fulkerson and her husband Brian Fulkerson of Jonesboro, Laura Landry Bresee and her husband Phineas Bresee of Memphis, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Ryan and Olivia Landry, Mya and Bobbi Fulkerson and Quinn and Luke Bresee; two sisters, Rebecca Royer Schade of Baton Rouge, La., and Judith Royer Wilkinson of Lafayette, La.; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2012, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Miles II and Rev. Patty Soward officiating. The family will receive friends in the Atrium at the church from 1 p.m. until service time.

SALEM — Laura Bell Blair was born Laura Bell Anner Branson to Lee and Libbie Branson on August 11, 1925, at Hand, Ark. She died November 13, 2012, at the age of 87 years, three months and two days. She was dedicated in the Missionary Baptist Church of Hand, Ark. Laura Bell married Arvis Junior Blair on April 14, 1946. They were blessed with four children: Cathy, Juanita, Joyce and Dale.

Laura and Arvis lived in West Plains, Mo.; Chardon, Ohio; Mountain Home and Conway, Arkansas, before moving to Salem where she has resided since 1980. She was employed by the Chardon, Ohio, Public School System, Peoples Bank of Mountain Home, Arkansas, and was a trusted employee in private homes.

Laura loved family and friends. She enjoyed music and dancing, and often met friends for coffee and laughter. She gathered her family by hosting a Branson Reunion annually.

Laura is preceded in death by her husband, Arvis Blair; her parents, Lee and Libbie Branson; a sister, Ellen Lawrence; two brothers, George Branson and Raymond Branson; and a daughter, Joyce Ann Van de Grift. Laura is survived by her brother, Charlie (Joyce) Branson; two daughters, Cathy (Tom) Lemon; Juanita (Wayne) Thomas; a son, Dale (Charolette) Blair; eight grandchildren: Thomas (Tammy) Lemon, Christina Dawson, Todd (Erin) Lemon, Natalie (David) Millard, Leticia (Bronson) Melton, Jeffie Laura Thomas, Clint (Jennifer) Thomas, Joseph Van de Grift, Kelly (Rory) Foren, Amy (Jason) Cantrell, Crystal (Jeff) Allen, and 22 great-grandchildren.
