— Scramble raises scholarship funds

On Sept. 14, the Northwest Arkansas Chapter of the Arkansas Alumni Association held its annual Pig Sooie Scramble Golf Tournament and Scholarship Fundraiser at Stonebridge Meadows in Fayetteville.

Proceeds fund the scholarships awarded by the chapter each year with $10,500 being awarded to seven college students who are from the Benton and Washington county areas. The winning team advanced to the Acura College Alumni Team Championship in Pinehurst, N.C.

With more than 20 teams competing, the J&J Logistics Group of Lowell - Jody Ward, Emie Hinton, Jason McKenzie and Cory Plummer - won the scramble.

The affair raised about $17,000 benefiting local University of Arkansas college students.

Kohl’s supports

healthy children

Kohl’s Department Stores recently presented Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock with a $156,000 donation.

The money will pay for print ads and billboards statewide to promote healthy habits for kids such as fitness, nutrition, dental health and hand washing.

The gift will also purchase and distribute educational materials featuring the Wellness Wonders characters and continue funding of the KidsHealth website resource library, which provides children and parents with information on a wide range ofhealth-related topics. Kohl’s will also sponsor the Hogeye Kids Marathon, scheduled for April 13 in Fayetteville.

Walmart awards $1,000 grant

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas has received a community grant for $1,000 from the Walmart International Compensation Department in support of its mentoring program.

The program matches children with volunteer mentors in one-to-one relationships that are proven to change a child’s life for the better.

Turkeys traded for workouts

Bentonville’s Precision Fitness, a group personal training facility for busy men and women, is teaming upwith the community to provide relief to needy families this holiday season.

All people who donate a frozen turkey will be provided with a free “damage control” workout on Thanksgiving Day before the big feast.

All turkeys will be donated to the NWA Food Bank.

People are asked to bring their turkeys to Precision Fitness Friday if they wish to participate.

Tailgate raises

money for kids

On the day of the Arkansas-Kentucky football game, Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter’s Tailgate for the Kids team posted an all-time record, scoring net proceeds of more than $132,000 to help abused and neglected children.

In its third year, the gridiron-themed tailgate party, eclipsed last year’s net proceeds by nearly 47 percent.

The event also included a special appeal to fund the Children’s Shelter’s new life skills and mentoring program. Tailgaters easily covered the program’s $5,000 startup costs, exceeding that goal by $7,000. The life skills and mentoring program focuses on teen-age residents, particularly those who are close to the age when theyhave to begin making some decisions about the future and putting some plans in place to make a successful transition to “life after foster care.” Habitat party

raises $32,000

Habitat for Humanity of Washington County hosted “An Evening with Jonathan and Kara Story” on Oct. 8.

The event raised $32,000 to help finish the home currently under construction in Springdale for Casey, Katherine and Isaac Burd.
