Travs mum on GM’s departure

— Two front office employees are no longer with the Arkansas Travelers, but the club isn’t saying why or how they left their posts.

Pete Laven, who had been general manager of the Travelers since 2007, and David Kay, who had been assistant general manager for tickets since 2007, are both no longer with the team, Phil Elson, the team’s media relations director, said Tuesday.

The Travelers are the Class AA minor-league affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels and are based in North Little Rock.

Club employees were told of the moves Monday. Elson, who also serves as the Travs’ radio broadcaster, did not give a reason for the change at the top of the Travs’ front office or who made the decision for the moves.

“All I can tell you is that Pete and David are no longer with the Travelers,” Elson said.

Elson also said he couldn’t confirm a Tuesday report that said Paul Allen, assistant general manager for sales, will serve as the team’s interim general manager.

Russ Meeks, president of the Travelers’ executive board, did not return phone messages Tuesday seeking comment, nor did Laven.

Kay declined to comment when reached on his cell phone Tuesday and an employee who answered the phone at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock said it’s the club’s policy not to comment on personnel matters.

However, a source familiar with team personnel said Tuesday that Laven, who served two stints with the Travelers totaling 15 years, was surprised by the news.

“He had no idea. He didn’t see it coming,” said the source, who asked not to be identified. “The club was doing fantastic.”

Laven first worked for the Travelers as a stadium operations intern at Little Rock’s Ray Winder Field in 1992 and 1993. He returned as director of stadium operations in 2000, and later served three seasons as the team’s assistant general manager and was named general manger by the club’s executive committee before the 2007 season, taking over for longtime boss Bill Valentine.

Laven was named Texas League Executive of the Year in 2006, the Travs’ last at Ray Winder Field that included the Texas League All-Star Game. The club moved to North Little Rock’s Dickey-Stephens Park in 2007.

Kay served as one of the team’s game-day staff members in 1996-2002 before returning in 2007 as its ticket director. Kay’s responsibilities included sponsorship and marketing sales, season ticket sales and box office operations, according to a bio that was removed the Travs’ website Tuesday.
