— A Springdale teacher who was arrested in September on marijuana charges has resigned.

Michael Perez-Guerra, 30, was in his second year teaching math at the School District’s Alternative Learning Center on Meadow Avenue.

He resigned Oct. 29, district officials said. He had been on paid administrative leave since his arrest.

Perez-Guerra was arrested Sept. 18 at his Elkins home after authorities said they discovered three marijuana plants growing there. Elkins police, assisted by the 4th Judicial Drug Task Force, found a 3-foot-tall marijuana plant growing in the backyard, according to the preliminary report. Upon obtaining a search warrant, officers went inside the home, where they reported finding 21.3 grams of marijuana and two potted marijuana plants.

Perez-Guerra was arrested in connection with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and manufacturing a controlled substance.

Another resident of the home, Karen Willard, 30, was arrested in connection with the same charges.

Both defendants have a trial scheduled for Jan. 10 in Circuit Judge William Storey’s courtroom.

Alfred Milam, Perez-Guerra’s attorney, declined comment on the case Tuesday.
