QUOTE OF THE DAY

“This was the heyday of American genre painting, when paintings told stories about who we are. It’s going to confirm the stereotype that people have about us as ‘the rugged American.’”

Staff and volunteers at the Fort Smith National Historic Site will host re-enactments of the historic trial the United States v. John Pointer at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday.

The case was heard by Judge Isaac C. Parker in 1892 at his Fort Smith courtroom.

On Dec. 26, 1891, Thomas Symons was hunting rabbits near Wilburton in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) when he stumble upon a smoldering campfire surrounded by blood. He found blood on nearby trees and a trail leading to two bodies.

U.S. marshals found a bloody ax in the hollow of a tree near the scene, and wagon tracks led them to John Pointer. The trial that followed had twists and turns, and the reenactment is not suitable for children 14 and younger.

Reservations for the re-enactments are requested as space in Judge Parker’s courtroom is limited. More information is available by calling (479) 783-3961.
